Australian Gold Kangaroo: Coin Profile & Buying Tips
The Australian Gold Kangaroo — originally issued as the Australian Gold Nugget — is an official gold bullion coin produced by the Perth Mint on behalf of the Government of Western Australia. The series began in 1986 under the Gold Corporation Act 1987 (WA), with The Perth Mint operating as a statutory authority owned by the Western Australian Government.
Early issues featured images of famous Australian gold nuggets, but from 1989 onward the design changed to the now-famous kangaroo motif, updated annually to highlight Australia’s national symbol. In October 2011 the Perth Mint cast a one-tonne gold coin — the largest and most valuable gold coin ever produced — overtaking the previous record held by the Royal Canadian Mint.
The Gold Kangaroo is a 24-karat bullion coin (.9999 fine) and is recognized internationally for its purity, legal-tender status, and collectible artistry. The obverse bears an effigy of the reigning monarch (currently King Charles III on new issues), while the reverse changes yearly to depict a kangaroo design unique to each mintage.

Silver Purity/types:
Unlike gold, silver is typically not classified by karats. Instead, silver purity is usually expressed as a percentage or parts per thousand. The most common purities are:
- Fine Silver (99.9%): Used in investment-grade bullion, coins, and bars.
- Sterling Silver (92.5%): Common in jewelry, silverware, and decorative items.
- Coin Silver (90%): Previously used in coins, now less common.
- Other Alloys: Lower purity silver used in budget or industrial applications.
Silver purity is often marked with stamps like "999," "925," or "900" to indicate the purity level.
